The Coast of Skåne

Excursion to Borstahusen

Borstahusen is a fishing village 40 km North-West of Lund.

We were a small group of ten pupils and two teachers, who went to Borstahusen in order to look at the nature and the activities at the coast.



Travel and Visit
Tuesday, November 24, we went to the coast at Borstahusen close to Landskrona.
First we had to go by bus to the train station in Lund, then by train to Landskrona, and then by bus to Borstahusen.
At Borstahusen we walked along the coast. It was very cold, and the wind was strong, and it smelled like rotten fish. The waves were huge, and we saw seagulls in the sky.

At the harbour, we tried to eat some of our food. But it was too cold, so we went up in the village to a dining-room at a church, where we ate lunch.
Then we visited a museum, the Pump House, which was near the harbour. There were old fishing stuffs and boat models.
Then we walked to the beach and drew pictures.
When it was half past twelve we went back to the school.

The fishing village Borstahusen
Borstahusen was first inhabited in the 18th century. In the middle of the 20th century Borstahusen became part of the town of Landskrona. Landskrona can be seen in the background of the picture below.

The Sound (Öresund) - Geography
Öresund is 118 km long. The narrowest point is between Helsingborg and Elsinore. There it is 3.5 km wide. The widest part is 40 km. At the the Landskrona depth near the island Ven, the depth is 50 m. One can see Ven in the background of the picture below.

The Sound (Öresund) - History
The narrowest part was a natural crossing between Skåne and Zealand (Denmark). The Vikings became dangerous pirates. To protect Skåne in the 900's, a castle was built. The people of Skåne had to protect traffic across the channel. Around the castle, the town of Helsingborg was growing up. On the Danish side, there was built a castle called Krogen, which later on was named Kronborg. This increased the traffic to Sweden. At 1658 Skåne became Swedish. During the 1800s two ferry routes started, Copenhagen-Malmö and Helsingborg-Elsinore. During World War II the coastline of Skåne was changed, with bunkers at each kilometer.
